Vince McMahon Jr., owner of WWE, and a big time marketing guru. This is a man that has got his head shaved by Donald Trump, he wrestled his son, he beat his daughter in an "I Quit" match. When it comes to female wrestling, he seems to just not have it together.
It started with Vince McMahon Sr. who got his wrestling promotion going in the 1950s. He coined Lillian Ellison with the name, "The Fabulous Moolah". For almost 30 years Moolah had kept the women title, there was little demand for female wrestling and got little exposure. In the 1980s Vince Jr. came up with a great gimmick called Rock N Wrestling which brought musicians and wrestlers together. This included a match between Wendi Richter whom was backed by Cyndi Lauper, and Fabulous Moolah whom was backed by Captain Lou Albano. Wendi won the title in the heavily watched match aired on MTV.
When viewers started getting the fascination of female wrestling, Vince Jr. pulled a "screw-job" on Wendi Richter. A "screw-job" is when a wrestler goes in a match thinking he was scripted to win, only to be lied to by what is normally the referee, the opponent and in this case, ordered by Vince McMahon Jr. There is much reference to the "Montreal Screw-Job" which he pulled on Bret Hart. This put women wrestling back a few steps and it seemed to disappear from television all together.
It wasn't until around 2000 when a resurgence of WWE female wrestling would come. With big help from women like Trish Stratus and Lita, WWE female wrestling was back on the map. Vince created the Diva search which has women competing for spots on the roster. This brought good wrestlers like Michelle McCool and Gail Kim to the public eye. The Fabulous Moolah even came back in 2003 and won the title for a short stint... she was 80.
Vince has a good collection of female wrestlers though their exposure is not consistent and the story lines leave a lot in the air. He has also made a habit of swimsuit competitions and other non-wrestling formats that were appraised for the short-term, but the female wrestling was harder to take seriously.
In 2002, Jeff Jarrett, former WWE and WCW wrestler created (Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling) TNA. Jeff was frustrated because there was no competition for WWE. Just 2 years before, Vince McMahon bought out WCW and ECW and eliminated all competitors. In the process, many wrestlers lost their jobs, even some getting fired on WWE programming.
Jeff Jarrett, with a financial partner, created TNA and struggled at first. Though with TNA's talented roster, they built a foundation. Then came some of the familiar names of the wrestling past; Sting, Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash and the list goes on.
In October of 2007 TNA made one of the best decisions since their conception in 2002. They created a TNA Knockouts Title. This is the TNA female title which started with a gauntlet match which included Angelina Love, Velvet Sky, ODB, Gail Kim, Awesome Kong and more now familiar names. Gail Kim became the 1st champion and this entire group of females were the best of the best that wrestling has to offer.
Since then, the story lines have been entertaining, TNA Knockout matches are highly viewed and respected and show no signs of slowing down. This is a David vs Goliath battle between Divas vs Knockouts though unless Vince makes some changes, the TNA Knockouts will continue to boom with popularity.
